Ex-Music Teacher Jailed for 17 Years Over Sick Sex Abuse of Pupils

Ben Breakwell, 40, from Monkgate, York, has been locked up for 17 years at Isleworth Crown Court for 32 horrific sexual offences. He will also remain on the sex offenders register for life.

Groomed Pupils for Abuse

Breakwell, a former west London school music teacher, preyed on vulnerable girls from 2014 to 2017. The court heard how he abused his position to groom and sexually exploit pupils aged between 13 and 16. Two victims were only 13 and 14 when the abuse started.

The offences included sexual activity with three girls and indecent images of a fourth, who lived abroad. Detectives uncovered these crimes after searching Breakwell’s computer following his arrest in November 2017.

Brave Victims Speak Out, Leading to Arrest

The case came to light in September 2017 when friends of one victim alerted a member of staff at the school. Breakwell was promptly suspended and the police launched an investigation.

Detective Sergeant Ben Lawrence-Smith said:

“Breakwell is a sexual predator who targeted vulnerable children. I’m pleased he’s now behind bars and can no longer harm anyone.”

He praised the victims for their courage:

“Without their bravery, justice would not have been possible. Breakwell betrayed their trust, manipulating them into thinking his abuse was love.”

DS Lawrence-Smith urged others to come forward:

“If you’re at risk or a victim of abuse, speak out. Tell a parent, carer, or someone in authority. Silence only protects the abuser.”

Justice Served, But Vigilance Needed

  • Breakwell was convicted on 2 August after a lengthy trial.
  • He was remanded in custody awaiting sentencing.
  • The investigation was led by West Area Basic Command Unit specialist officers.

This case highlights the urgent need to protect children from abuse, especially in trusted positions like teaching.
