Gambling Addict Jailed for Terrifying Hotel Robberies and Rape Spree
Aaron Gardner, 29, of Wollaton, has been locked up for 19 years after a brutal series of attacks across Nottingham, Birmingham, and London. The gambler targeted five women over three months in 2019, using violence and threats to rob them and feed his addiction.
Shocking Attacks on Women in Hotels
- In April 2019, Gardner attacked a woman in Nottingham, choking her and smothering her screams with a pillow. He stole £3,000 and her phone after threatening to kill her.
- In July, in London, he put another woman in a 20-minute headlock, demanding cash and stealing £60.
- Days later in Birmingham, he threatened a woman with a fake gun and took £1,500 from her bag.
- Another July attack in Nottingham saw him drag a woman to the floor, causing injuries, before stealing from her.
- His most horrendous crime came in Birmingham later that month when he raped a woman, stuffing newspaper in her mouth to silence her and threatening to kill her and her family if she followed him.
Police Track Down Offender After Tireless Investigation
Gardner was finally caught in Basford after police executed a search warrant. They seized mobile phones, a t-shirt, and a baseball cap linked to the crimes. Detective Constable Raj Johal praised the victims’ courage and police teamwork that led to the conviction and hefty sentence.
“This was an appalling catalogue of offences that – had it not been for the bravery and determination of the victims – would have gone unresolved and unpunished,” said DC Johal.
“Gardner carried out violent attacks on five escorts, stealing hundreds of pounds to fuel his gambling. CCTV and phone data helped us track his movements and link him to the crimes.”
“Today’s sentencing offers some closure for the victims who showed great courage throughout this difficult process.”
“To any survivors of sexual abuse: it’s never too late to speak out. We will listen, investigate, and pursue justice.”
Sentenced to Serve 19 Years & Registered as Sex Offender for Life
Gardner was convicted of five counts of robbery, one count of rape, and one count of possession of an imitation firearm with intent. Nottingham Crown Court handed down the 19-year sentence on 27 November 2020. He must also sign the sex offenders’ register for life.
