Boater Busted for Dangerous Speeding on Dorset Waters
Speed Demon on Poole Harbour Snared
The Dorset Marine Policing Team, alongside Poole Harbour Commissioners, cracked down on a reckless motor vessel known as Sonic. On Saturday, 29 August 2020, the craft was caught speeding dangerously in Wareham and Poole Harbour, putting other water users at serious risk.
First-Time Offender Faces Tough Conditions
A 30-year-old man from Hertfordshire admitted breaking the Merchant Shipping (Safety of Navigation) Regulations 2020. Instead of harsh court action, he received a community resolution notice – a first under the new law.
- Must take a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) approved boat handling course before using vessels in Dorset waters again.
- Required to pay all outstanding harbour dues owed to Poole Harbour Commissioners.
- Must write a formal apology to the Environment Agency, which safeguards the River Frome’s wildlife.
Authorities Warn: Know Your Byelaws or Pay the Price
Marine Policing Team co-ordinator Roan Doyle blasted the man’s poor navigation skills and excessive speed. “This behaviour is a disaster waiting to happen,” he said. “Ignorance is no excuse. Anyone boating must know the rules.”
Doyle added that while first offenders who show remorse can expect community resolutions and mandatory training, repeat or serious offenders will face the full force of the law.
Protecting Wildlife and Water Users
Captain Brian Murphy of Poole Harbour Commissioners vowed to keep hunting down dangerous boaters and educate users on their responsibilities. “The rules exist to protect lives, wildlife, and the environment,” he warned. “Break them, and there will be consequences.”
Environment Agency Fisheries Specialist Stuart Kingston-Turner highlighted the strict four-knot speed limit on the River Frome designed to protect the river’s banks, property, and visitors. “Whether a seasoned mariner or a first-time canoeist, everyone must respect speed limits for everyone’s safety,” he said.
The joint crackdown sends a clear message: Dorset’s waterways are not playgrounds for speed fiends. Stay safe, stick to the rules, or face action.
