Knife-Wielding Nigel Doherty Jailed for Brutal Assaults on Partner
Shocking Attack Near Town Centre
Nigel Doherty launched a series of vicious attacks on his victim last year, including inflicting knife wounds. On 10 September 2020, police rushed to a property near Maidstone town centre after reports of screaming.
Officers found the woman inside suffering multiple injuries. Doherty had dragged her by her clothing into the kitchen and subjected her to a sustained, savage assault.
Knife Used to Cut Victim’s Leg
Doherty was arrested that same evening. The investigation uncovered a history of abuse. At one point, he slashed the victim’s leg with a knife — a chilling sign of the torment she endured.
Judge Slaps Doherty with Two and a Half Years in Jail
At Maidstone Crown Court, the 43-year-old pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm, assault by beating, common assault, possession of a knife in public, and wounding without intent.
A charge of wounding with intent was left to lie on file. On 19 March 2021, Doherty was sentenced to two years and six months behind bars.
Police Urge Victims to Speak Out
“Doherty subjected his victim to horrific attacks, including kicking her so hard her head smashed into a wall,” said PC Geena Beddoes, lead investigator. “She’s faced relentless physical violence and mental torment. I hope this sentence offers her some comfort and the chance to rebuild her life.”
PC Beddoes added, “Domestic violence is a top priority for Kent Police. If you’re trapped in abuse, reach out. There’s support out there — you can call us or ask a trusted friend to help. No one should feel they can’t escape domestic abuse.”
