Jack Lis Mauled to Death by Rampaging XL Bully Dog ‘Beast’
On November 8, 2021, tragedy struck in Pentwyn, Penyrheol, when Jack Lis was savagely attacked and killed by a massive American XL Bully dog known as ‘Beast’.
Owners Guilty After Fatal Attack
The court heard Jack died from “catastrophic and unsurvivable injuries” caused by the out-of-control dog. Amy Salter, 28, and Brandon Hayden, 19, pleaded guilty last month to charges of owning a dangerously out-of-control dog that caused injury and death.
Hayden also admitted to five further counts of failing to control the dog between November 4 and 7, 2021.
Long Prison Sentences and Lifetime Ban
Hayden was jailed for four years and six months, while Salter received a three-year prison sentence at Cardiff Crown Court today. Both have been banned from owning dogs ever again.
How ‘Beast’ Became so Deadly
- Hayden spotted a Facebook ad on November 3 offering a dog free to a good home but warned of behaviour issues.
- He took ownership days later and asked Salter, his six-month-old girlfriend, if the dog could stay at her house due to lack of space.
- On November 8, ‘Beast’—weighing nearly 100 pounds—attacked Jack Lis in the home.
- A police officer intervened, allowing Jack to be pulled to safety, but emergency services couldn’t save him.
- Officers later shot the dog to stop the attack.
Ryan Randall of the Crown Prosecution Service said: “Our thoughts remain with Jack, his family and friends, who have suffered a heart-wrenching loss.”
Despite clear warnings about the dog’s aggression, Hayden and Salter failed to take proper control measures. Randall added, “Their failure to do so resulted in disastrous consequences.”
