Uncle Jailed for Life After Murdering Young Woman
Mohammed Taroos Khan, 53, from Thornbury Road, was convicted of murdering his niece, Somaiya Begum, 20, at Bradford Crown Court on Tuesday 14 March. Khan also admitted perverting the course of justice at the start of the trial.
Brutal Attack and Body Dumped in Wasteland
Somaiya was viciously attacked in her Binnie Street home by Khan on 25 June 2022. He then callously dumped her body on wasteland on Fitzwilliam Street, where police found it on 6 July.
Life Sentence with Minimum 25 Years
Khan was given a life sentence and must serve at least 25 years behind bars.
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Superintendent Marc Bowes said:
“Somaiya was a bright young woman studying for a degree and working part time to support herself. She was happy and content with her home life. But her whole future was cruelly stolen by her own uncle—someone meant to love and protect her.”
“Khan’s horrendous attack is chilling, and his attempts to hide the crime by dumping her body show total disregard for human life.”
“Although nothing can bring Somaiya back, we hope this sentence gives her family and friends some comfort knowing justice was served.”
Crown Prosecutor Demands Justice for Victims
Senior Crown Prosecutor Daniel Lee of CPS Yorkshire and Humberside said:
“Somaiya had her whole life ahead of her. Her murder is a devastating tragedy. Working with West Yorkshire Police, we presented clear evidence proving Khan’s guilt.
“Our thoughts remain with Somaiya’s loved ones. We hope this conviction brings some measure of justice.”
“Women deserve to feel safe. The CPS is determined to hold violent offenders accountable and secure justice for all victims.”
