Portsmouth Man Jailed for Rape and Sexual Assault

Stuart Lionel Cosgrave, 48, from Fyning Street, Portsmouth, was sentenced to over ten years behind bars at Portsmouth Crown Court on Friday, June 17. He had already pleaded guilty to horrendous charges, including the rape of a woman aged over 16 and sexually assaulting a female over 13.

Shocking Discovery on Seized Phones

The victim, a woman in her 40s, was once in a relationship with Cosgrave back in 2018. She had previously reported him to the police for burglary and harassment. When Cosgrave was arrested, officers seized two of his phones.

Detectives uncovered multiple videos showing apparent sexual assaults. The victim identified herself in the footage, leading to Cosgrave’s charges and guilty plea.

Long Sentence for Sexual Predator

Cosgrave received a hefty prison sentence of ten and a half years, followed by a five-year licence period. The tough penalty reflects the gravity of his crimes and ensures he will be behind bars for a significant time.

Police Praise Victim’s Bravery and Urge Others to Speak Out

“We would not have gotten this conviction and sentence today if it hadn’t been for her bravery,” said Detective Constable Vicki Bousfield and Detective Sergeant Beth Marshall, who led the investigation.

“We hope this outcome provides her with some closure knowing Cosgrave will serve a lengthy prison sentence.”

“This sentence sends a message to victims of sexual assault or rape: no matter how long ago it happened, come forward. We take all allegations seriously and work tirelessly to bring offenders to justice.”

Police also highlighted their partnership with support organisations for victims. Anyone affected by sexual crimes is urged to call 101 for confidential help or reach out to independent support agencies for assistance.
