Man Admits Stabbing Woman in Streatham Hill
A 43-year-old man has pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of a woman he stabbed while she was pushing her child in Streatham Hill.
Attack Caught on CCTV After Chase Across London
Mark Brazant, from Windmill Road, Ealing, appeared at the Old Bailey on 6 August where he admitted attempted murder. He will be sentenced on 1.
The stabbing happened at 5.23pm on Monday, 30 December 2019, in Downton Avenue, Streatham Hill. The victim was attacked from behind and left injured in the street. Fortunately, her injuries were not life-threatening or life-changing. Her child, who was in a pushchair at the time, was unharmed.
Following the attack, Brazant fled down Downton Avenue away from the High Road. He spent hours travelling around London on public transport in search of a victim, police said.
Guilty Plea After Intense Police Hunt
Detectives from Central South CID launched a full investigation. CCTV footage traced Brazant’s movements across the capital before his arrest. Three days later, after widespread media coverage, he turned himself in at a police station.
On 2 January, Brazant was charged with attempted murder, possession of an offensive weapon, and possession of pointed or bladed articles. He had already admitted to multiple counts related to offensive weapons at the start of the trial.
Police Praise Victim’s Bravery
Acting Detective Sergeant Mark Pascall said: “I am pleased with today’s result. Brazant tried to claim he wasn’t in sound mind, but his actions clearly showed intent to cause harm. He is dangerous and unpredictable.
“We don’t know why he targeted this particular woman, but thankfully she was not more seriously injured.
“Thanks to the thorough work of the investigation team, we acted quickly to take him off London’s streets.
“I commend the victim for her bravery and courage in giving evidence against the man who caused her serious harm.”
