Luis Balcazar-Soto Jailed for Deadly Drunk Drive Horror
Drunk Driver Who Killed Pedicab Passenger Sentenced
Luis Balcazar-Soto, 24, from Southwark, was handed a nine-year jail term at Southwark Crown Court on Tuesday, November 1. He was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving and sentenced to an additional three years for causing serious injury by dangerous driving, both to run concurrently.
On top of this, he received nine months for breaching a restraining order and a suspended sentence, which will run consecutively, pushing his total time behind bars even higher.
Judge Slams Driver’s “Appalling” Record and Reckless Actions
Judge Taylor blasted Balcazar-Soto’s reckless behaviour, saying: “You are 24-years-old without a driving licence and have a shocking history of driving offences. Sophie’s family’s victim impact statements show the deep pain and loss you’ve caused.”
The judge added: “She was only 31 years old – a life your actions have taken. Your dangerous driving was compounded by alcohol, no licence, and no insurance. Despite previous offences, you repeated the same dangerous patterns with deadly consequences.”
Fatal Crash on New Kent Road: Victim Sophie Strickland Dies at Scene
The crash happened at 4.10am on Sunday, 10 July, when Balcazar-Soto’s car smashed into a pedicab on New Kent Road, SE1. Emergency crews rushed to the scene where 31-year-old Sophie Strickland, from Wales, tragically died instantly.
Balcazar-Soto was arrested for causing death by dangerous driving and driving under the influence. He was charged the next day with multiple offences including driving without a licence or insurance and breaching a restraining order.
Police: “No Licence, No Right to Risk Lives on the Road”
Detective Constable Janine Andrews of the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “This has been a harrowing ordeal for Sophie’s family. Driving is a privilege that comes with responsibility. Those who ignore this and risk others’ lives have no business behind the wheel.
“Soto’s significant sentence reflects the devastating loss his reckless behaviour caused. My thoughts remain with Sophie’s loved ones.”
