On August 9, 2021, Khan boarded a train at Manchester Victoria heading towards Clitheroe. Passengers were left shaken when he started making threats of future violence, while spouting disturbing comments about 9/11 and the Taliban.

A vigilant passenger alerted a member of the train staff, who tracked Khan down to his carriage before rushing to call 999.

The train was brought to a halt at Darwen station where police officers swooped in. Passengers were swiftly ushered to safety, and Khan was detained despite verbally abusing and acting aggressively towards cops.

Officers found a knife in Khan’s backpack and arrested him on suspicion of possessing a bladed article in public.

Counter Terrorism Chief Praises Public and Staff for Swift Action

“This was a terrifying incident for the passengers stuck on a moving train with Khan making such concerning threats,” said Detective Chief Inspector Kay Dennison of Counter Terrorism Policing North West.

“His actions forced the closure of Darwen station, causing widespread disruption and panic locally. Khan’s behaviour was alarming and unacceptable, putting the public in fear.”

“I want to thank the public who reported Khan, offered witness accounts, and the train staff for their prompt action in alerting the police.”
