Pensioner Murderer Jailed for Life in Accrington

John Swannack, 59, has been handed a life sentence with a minimum 30-year term by Judge Robert Altham at Preston Crown Court for the brutal murder of 79-year-old Bill Howard in Accrington.

Brutal Attack on Vulnerable Pensioner

Emergency services were called to St James Street, Accrington, just before 2pm on August 28 last year after concerns for Bill Howard’s welfare. They found the pensioner with serious head injuries and multiple stab wounds. Despite efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Evidence revealed Bill suffered a horrific, sustained assault, including having an accelerant poured on him. The post-mortem confirmed fatal head and chest injuries as the cause of death.

Swannack Caught Using Victim’s Bank Card

Detectives pieced together Bill’s last days, identifying August 24 as the last time he was seen alive. CCTV caught Swannack leaving Bill’s home that day carrying a black bin bag and walking stick — believed to be after the murder. Swannack was also seen using Bill’s bank card multiple times until his arrest on August 29.

Further investigation showed Swannack exploited other vulnerable men in the area, stealing thousands from them:

  • July 19: Withdrawn £500 from a housebound former neighbour
  • August 16: Withdrawn £350 from a man with speech and mobility difficulties and stole his wallet
  • Total thefts amounted to £2,360

Detective Slams ‘Callous’ Killer

“Swannack is a callous and manipulative individual who deliberately targeted elderly and vulnerable people to fuel his expensive crack cocaine habit,” said DCI Allen Davies.

“Bill Howard was the exact opposite — a kind, quiet man who never bothered anyone. I don’t want to imagine his suffering in his final hours at Swannack’s hands.”

“The sentence reflects Swannack’s dangerousness and the seriousness of his offences. My thoughts are with Bill’s family, especially his brother Jack.”

“Thanks to a thorough investigation and overwhelming evidence, Swannack had no choice but to admit what he’d done.”

Family Mourn ‘Kind and Gentle’ Bill

Bill’s brother Jack Howard: “Bill was one of four brothers, and we were always close. Everyone knew him as a kind and gentle soul who would never hurt a fly. He never deserved this.”

“Bill faced many hardships. He raised his son alone after his wife died young, and sadly his son passed away as a young adult. Despite the pain, Bill lived quietly and kept strong bonds with family.”

“We met regularly, shared quiet times at the pub, and supported each other. Those peaceful days are gone forever.”

A 55-year-old and a 56-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the case have been released with no further action.
