Predator Jailed for Nearly Eight Years After Brazen Rape Attack in Witham

Man Faces Heavy Sentence After Shocking Assault

Marian Tanascua, 43, homeless and on the run from stability, was handed a hefty prison term at Chelmsford Crown Court on Wednesday, 4 November. The court sentenced him to six years and eight months behind bars. But that’s not all – once released, he must spend another eight years on licence, keeping him under strict supervision.

Terrifying Attack in the Early Hours

The horror unfolded in the early hours of Tuesday 14 July. A woman in her 20s was walking home from a friend’s house in Witham when she spotted a man lurking suspiciously behind her. The man suddenly stumbled and fell to the ground. When she tried to help, he placed his arm around her, kissed her on the cheek, and touched her inappropriately. Terrified, she told him to stop and walked away.

Violent Rape After Woman Rejects Advance

Tanascua then offered her money for sex. When she refused and tried to walk off, he turned verbally abusive. But it didn’t stop there. The predator suddenly dashed after her, grabbed her hair, dragged her to the ground, and raped her.

Swift Police Action Leads to Arrest and Guilty Plea

The victim promptly reported the attack, leading to a swift police response. Officers identified and arrested Tanascua on suspicion of rape. Charged with three counts of rape, he pleaded guilty at Chelmsford Crown Court on 7 September.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Greg Wood praised the victim’s bravery:

“I would like to praise the victim for the courage and strength she has shown throughout this ordeal. I would also like to thank the members of the public who called police when something didn’t appear right. Thanks to their help and the victim’s bravery, we secured a conviction and ensure Marian Tanascua paid the price for this predatory and violent crime.”
