Predator Gets 10 Years for Brutal Attack on 14-Year-Old Girl
Leon Ward, 49, from New Addington, was sentenced at Croydon Crown Court to 10 years in prison on Friday, 24 February. He must serve six years and eight months behind bars, with the rest on licence. Ward was convicted of attempted rape and sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl.
He will also be registered as a sex offender for life. The conviction followed a hearing at the same court on 10 February.
How Ward Targeted His Victim
Ward first spotted the victim in New Addington in May 2020 and quickly befriended her. After a few chance encounters, he began sending her texts, pressuring her to send compromising photos — which she thankfully refused.
On 18 May 2020, the girl agreed to meet Ward for a walk in the woods. It was there that Ward sexually assaulted her and tried to rape her.
Swift Justice After Arrest
Ward was arrested the same day. He was charged on 10 November 2021 with:
- Attempted rape of a 14-year-old
- Three counts of sexual assault by penetration
- Two counts of sexual assault by touching
- Sexual communication with a child
All offences involved the same victim.
Detective Praises Victim’s Bravery
Detective Constable Jamie Munro: “Ward took advantage of a vulnerable young girl, believing she would stay silent. Thankfully, he was wrong. I applaud the bravery of the victim in coming forward. Her courage may have saved others from similar harm.
“Catching and prosecuting offenders who prey on women and girls is a top priority. I urge anyone affected by sexual offences to contact the police for support and justice.”
