Man admits brutal murder of pensioner on Isle of Wight
Gerard White killed in shocking attack
A 73-year-old man was found dead after a vicious assault in a peaceful Isle of Wight community garden. Gerard White, from Sandown, was discovered lifeless by police on Monday 27 May in Lake Community Gardens near Scotchells Brook Lane.
The post-mortem revealed he died from neck compression.
Jonathan Stasiuk pleads guilty
Sixty-year-old Jonathan Christopher Stasiuk, also of Sandown, was arrested and charged with murder. His trial began on 4 November at Southampton Crown Court. But just days before it ended, Stasiuk shocked the court by admitting he killed Mr White.
Detective blasts lack of remorse
“This was a brutal attack on a much-loved and respected member of the community,” said Detective Inspector Toby Elcock.
“Jon Stasiuk shockingly showed no remorse throughout the process until the trial, only making full admissions after first trying to plead manslaughter due to diminished responsibility – a defence we rejected.”
“Our thoughts are with Mr White’s family and friends who have had to endure this lengthy legal battle.”
Sentencing set for Thursday
Stasiuk will be sentenced at Southampton Crown Court on Thursday 14 November.
