Wheelchair-Bound Man Jailed for Punching Officer at Southend Hospital
Danny Kelly, 60, has been sentenced to two years behind bars after assaulting a police officer in Southend. The wheelchair-bound man also triggered an 18-month suspended sentence linked to a vicious 2017 attack.
Attack Sparks Police Action
On June 8 at around 3.30pm, officers were called to reports of Kelly causing chaos—blocking a road and shouting. An ambulance worker reported that Kelly was aggressive and had a minor head injury.
Kelly was taken to hospital, but things escalated when he landed a punch to a police officer’s face as she arrived to help.
Old Crimes Come Back to Haunt
The court also activated an 18-month suspended sentence from October 2019. This dated back to a 2017 incident where Kelly inflicted grievous bodily harm on a man, who suffered a slash wound requiring seven stitches to his face after visiting Kelly’s address at 1 Road, Southend.
Police Condemn Violent Outburst
“Kelly was causing a disturbance, shouting and blocking a road,” said PC Kelly Rayfield of Southend CID.
“We were trying to get him medical treatment in his best interest, but he punched an officer in the face at the hospital. This behaviour was unnecessary and unacceptable.”
“He had already been handed a suspended sentence for a previous attack. Now, he’ll be spending time behind bars.”
