Company Boss Denies Dumping 27 Tonnes of Waste on Staffordshire Country Lane
Massive Fly-Tip Blocks Road
Darren Sheen, director of Fusion Engineering, faces tough charges over a shocking fly-tipping scandal in rural Staffordshire. He pleaded not guilty today at Stafford Crown Court to dumping a colossal 27 tonnes of untreated waste on a quiet country lane in Curborough, near Lichfield.
Residents woke to find a towering 10-foot mound of rubbish stretching 27 yards across their only access road on the morning of 19 January 2025. The illegal dump left several homes cut off and stranded overnight.
£10,000 Council Cleanup & Multiple Charges
Lichfield District Council had to fork out around £10,000 to clear the mess. Investigators tracked the waste back to Fusion Engineering, leading to a serious legal showdown.
Sheen faces nine charges including:
- Depositing controlled waste likely to pollute or harm health
- Failing to transfer waste to authorised carriers
- Wilful obstruction of a highway
- Dangerous driving (a personal charge)
The allegations hit both Sheen and his company hard.
Trial Pushed Back Until 2027
Despite denying all charges, Sheen won’t face trial until 8 March 2027 due to a backlog of cases and the complicated evidence involved.
“I’m conscious of how unsatisfactory this timeline is. Unfortunately, the reality of the current listing constraints leaves us with little alternative,” said Judge Avik Mukherjee.
A pre-trial review is set for 29 June 2026, when expert reports from prosecution and defence will be examined.
Residents Fuming, Council Vows Action
Locals stuck by the dump are seething over the disruption and the long wait for justice.
“It was disgraceful. We had no way out for hours until the council turned up. It’s appalling that this could take another two years to resolve,” said one outraged homeowner.
Lichfield District Council stressed the seriousness of illegal dumping:
“Illegal dumping of waste is a serious crime that affects communities and places a financial burden on taxpayers. We are committed to ensuring those responsible are brought to justice.”
Sheen remains on bail ahead of upcoming court dates.
