Violent thug bites police officer’s ear off in brutal attack during drug arrest in Maidstone

Kalvin Stemp’s vicious brawl with cops

Kalvin Stemp went berserk when police tried to arrest him for drug offences in Maidstone town centre. The 25-year-old bit one officer’s ear so hard the cartilage was left exposed. Not done there, Stemp also bit the officer’s arm and spat in his face as he violently resisted arrest.

The chaos kicked off on the evening of 6 November 2021, when two uniformed officers patrolling Medway Street caught a whiff of cannabis coming from Stemp’s direction. When they moved in to detain him for a search, Stemp tried to make a run for it — igniting a violent struggle.

Gang violence erupts during arrest attempt

Stemp’s pals, Andrew Smith and Daniel Colegate, jumped in to shield him. The trio pushed, kicked, and punched officers in an aggressive bid to free their mate. Despite initially detaining Stemp, the cops were outnumbered.

Seizing the moment, Stemp headbutted an officer before delivering the savage bite to his ear. He also bit the officer’s arm and spat in his face and hair.

Manhunt ends with court convictions

Stemp and his associates fled but were caught and arrested on 8 and 9 November. All faced Maidstone Crown Court charges.

  • Kalvin Stemp, from Howley Way, Maidstone, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault—one causing grievous bodily harm with intent—and to escaping lawful custody. He was sentenced to three years and two months in prison on 14 October.
  • Andrew Smith, 50, of Skinner’s Way, Langley, admitted assaulting an emergency worker and received a 12-month community order including an electronic curfew.
  • Daniel Colegate, 25, from Addison Close, East Malling, also pleaded guilty to two counts of assaulting an emergency worker and was handed a 15-month community order with 200 hours of unpaid work.

Police slam ‘appalling’ violent attack on officers

“The level of violence and aggression displayed by all involved was simply appalling,” said Chief Inspector Mark McLellan, District Commander for Maidstone. “Stemp bit an officer so violently the ear cartilage was exposed. The attack will likely leave lasting scars. This sentence sends a clear message: violence against emergency workers will never be tolerated. Assaulted officers shouldn’t view this as ‘just part of the job’. We will always seek justice for those who cause physical and emotional harm while our officers protect the public.”
