Life Behind Bars for Brixton Knife Killer Mohammed Nur
Mohammed Nur, 34, of Bond Way, SW8, was slapped with a life sentence on Thursday, 23 May. He must serve at least 32 years behind bars.
Admitted Murder and Knife Offences
Nur earlier confessed to murdering Johanita, possession of an offensive weapon, and carrying a pointed or bladed article during a hearing at the Old Bailey on 17 November 2023.
Guilty of Three Separate Knife Attacks Before Murder
On Monday, 13 May, Nur was found guilty of three counts of unlawful wounding. These attacks happened in Brixton on 29 April 2023 – just two days before Johanita’s killing. Nur slashed victims’ cheeks with a sharp weapon in a rapid-fire spree lasting five minutes.
A Family Devastated
“Johanita passing, so violently, has left a big hole in our lives and a massive hole in our hearts. It wasn’t her time to go,” her father told the court.
“There are parts of your heart you could never imagine could feel so much pain unless you go through the loss we have gone through. It is not possible to fully explain how much this has impacted our 123 now.”
Key Moments of the Crime Spree
- 29 April: Nur launches three random slash attacks in Brixton’s Acre Lane between 11.25pm and 11.29pm.
- 1 May: Nur kills Johanita as she walks along Stockwell Park Walk, SW9.
- 2 May: Police arrest Nur after a stop-and-search on Brixton Hill. He remains silent during questioning.
Evidence and CCTV Seal the Case
Officers recovered the knife Nur used and found traces of Johanita’s blood and Nur’s DNA on fabric wrapped around the weapon. Nur was wearing distinctive clothes matching CCTV images of the suspect seen attacking victims on 29 April and murdering Johanita.
Detectives pieced together Nur’s movements and attacks from hours of CCTV footage, building a solid timeline against him.
Detective Chief Inspector’s Statement
Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Webb, leader of the investigation, said:
“Mohammed Nur has been jailed for four violent offences, carried out at random in terrifying circumstances. I realise nothing can alleviate the pain that Johanita’s family continue to endure, but I hope they – and the three others Nur attacked – find some comfort in his conviction and lengthy imprisonment.
The proactive work of officers stopped Nur in his tracks, and he has now been held to account for his horrific actions.”
