Man in 50s Brutally Attacked on Chelmsford Street
A man in his 50s was left unconscious after a vicious attack while walking on Duke Street, Chelmsford. The victim was en route to meet his wife around 9.50pm on 15 November last year when trouble struck outside Home Foods.
Unprovoked Punch from Behind Leaves Victim with Amnesia
38-year-old Darryl Bright launched an unprovoked assault, smashing the victim to the back of the head and knocking him out cold. When the man came to, he called his wife, who rushed him to hospital after seeing his injuries. The victim suffered memory loss and a fractured thumb. For days, he believed he’d simply fallen over.
Wife’s Determination Leads to Arrest
Suspecting foul play, the victim’s wife returned to Home Foods on 26 November and discovered the attack was caught on CCTV. Police swooped after sharing the attacker’s images. Bright was ID’d by PCSOs and arrested in January.
Two Years Behind Bars for Chelmsford Attacker
Bright, from Ben Wilson Link, pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm without intent on 1 February. He was sentenced to 2 years and 3 months in Chelmsford Crown Court on 1 March.
“Darryl Bright carried out a horrific, unprovoked attack,” said investigating officer PC Connor Kerrell. “The consequences have been severe for the victim who now suffers memory loss. I pay tribute to his courage and his wife’s determination to uncover the truth. Bright is a dangerous individual and I’m relieved he has been removed from our city for the foreseeable future.”
