Drunken Brawl Ends in Tragedy as Man Dies After Brutal Street Attack
Lance Colston has been locked up for seven years and five months after a savage assault that killed 55-year-old Jason Orwin. The tragic attack happened on the evening of 31 July 2020 in Bower Place.
Warning Leads to Violent Confrontation
At around 6.40pm, Mr Orwin was out with a friend when they spotted two men acting drunk across the road. Worried for his partner nearby, Jason warned her to stay clear of the rowdy pair. That’s when Colston, 37, overheard and crossed over to confront him.
What followed was a brutal assault. Colston punched Mr Orwin on the side of the head, knocking him unconscious. He didn’t stop there—Colston then attacked Jason’s friend with a milk bottle and even tried to hit the victim’s father when he arrived at the scene.
Fatal Head Injury and Swift Police Action
Family rushed to help Jason until paramedics arrived, but he suffered a severe head injury and tragically died in hospital the next day, 1 August. Police launched an urgent investigation by the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate.
Colston was arrested later that evening at his Tonbridge Road home. On 2 August, Crown Prosecution Service charged him with manslaughter and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Investigator Condemns Colston’s ‘Ferocious, Unprovoked Attack’
“Mr Orwin was simply looking out for his partner when Colston launched an unprovoked and ferocious attack,” said Senior Investigating Officer DCI Neil Kimber. “He continued to assault others after Mr Orwin fell unconscious without any concern for his victim’s welfare. Now a family mourns a tragic loss.”
“I want to thank witnesses and Mr Orwin’s family for their vital help throughout this investigation, which helped bring this violent individual to justice.”
