Drunk driver tears through M4 at 100mph, crashes and flees scene

Sean Thomas Matthews, 39, from Llanrhidian, Swansea, faced Swindon Magistrates on March 18 after a terrifying high-speed chase on the M4. He admitted to dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, hit-and-run, and drink driving.

Cops block motorway for welfare check – driver guns it

On January 12, 2021, at around 10.15pm, PC Steve Harding was called to junction 16 of the M4 after reports a man was walking dangerously close to the carriageway. To keep traffic safe, PC Harding set up a rolling roadblock, slowing traffic to just 30mph with clear “do not overtake” signs displayed at the rear.

But Matthews, behind the wheel of a 1-series BMW, ignored the warnings and slammed the accelerator. He raced past the police cruiser at over 100mph, triggering flashing blue lights in a desperate bid to stop him.

Smash-and-run chaos on busy motorway

Matthews then left the M4 at junction 16, losing control and smashing into a traffic light pole. The impact sent the pole flying 50 metres into the road — a danger to everyone nearby.

Despite the crash, Matthews didn’t stop. He drove on, completely unlit, causing more risk on the dark motorway stretch between junction 15 and the 1 services.

Police slam reckless driver’s selfish stunt

PC Harding said: “Matthews ignored repeated instructions not to overtake and drove at extreme speed, putting lives at risk. After crashing into a traffic light pole, he continued driving without lights on a busy road. His selfish and thoughtless behaviour was far below the standard expected from a competent driver.”

Justice served: Community order, huge fine, and driving ban

Matthews was handed an 18-month community order and ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work. He was fined a hefty £5,000, must pay £425 in costs, and banned from driving for 12 months.

Another close call on UK roads – and a reminder to always obey the law behind the wheel.
