Man Jailed for Attacking Police Dog in Shocking Colchester Incident
A thug who grabbed a police dog by the throat during a dramatic arrest in Colchester has been convicted of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. Niall Martin, 29, of Stalin Road, admitted the brutal attack at Colchester Magistrates’ Court on January 23.
Martin was handed a 10-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. He was also slammed with £300 court costs, a £115 victim surcharge, and £50 compensation. On top of that, he must complete a 19-day programme and 30 days rehabilitation. He also received a £150 fine for breaching a domestic violence protection order.
Police Dog Ivy Attacked During Arrest
The shocking attack took place on January 22, 2019, after reports of a domestic incident on Blackthorne Avenue. Police Dog Ivy and handler PC Sophie Chesters arrived at the scene around 10.30pm. Martin was spotted fleeing and caught climbing a fence by Ivy.
While being arrested, Martin escaped but was quickly recaptured by Ivy. It was then he viciously forced open the dog’s mouth and grabbed her throat, causing her to scream. PC Chesters found Martin with his hands around Ivy’s throat and swiftly arrested him with help from two Special Constables.
Heroic Police Dog Retires After Bravery
“Police Dog Ivy retired earlier this month and she is happily settled into home life with me and my family. She enjoys laying on the sofa and being treated like a princess,” said PC Chesters.
“I was extremely proud of her during the incident. Despite being attacked, she did her utmost to protect me while detaining Martin. Ivy remains a well-balanced and sociable dog and only a few nights later caught a fleeing burglar in Colchester.”
Police Praise Ivy’s Loyalty and Bravery
Chief Inspector Shaun Kane said: “This incident was particularly cruel due to the vicious attack Martin had subjected Police Dog Ivy to. Police dogs are very much our staff and members of our policing family.”
“They act in the service of duty to keep people safe in our communities, upholding the law and keeping the peace. There was no excuse for the behaviour Martin displayed. I am immensely proud of the police response on the day and bravery shown by all.”
