Crime Boss Nabbed: Michael Derrane Jailed for Guns and Drugs Empire
Michael Derrane, 50, used the encrypted messaging service EncroChat to mastermind a weapons and drugs syndicate. The Morpeth man dealt in firearms and kilos of Class A and B drugs, selling wholesale to criminals for big profits.
Encrypted Messages Expose Criminal Network
Evidence from encrypted chats revealed Derrane’s deep ties to serious organised crime groups in 123. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to transfer prohibited weapons and conspiracy to supply heroin, cocaine, and cannabis. Derrane was sentenced to 19 years and two months behind bars.
The seizure included a 123 fully automatic firearm, ammo, Class B drugs, and £6,000 cash.
Accomplice Caught Red-Handed
On 2 July 2020, Alsi Vata, 26, who conspired with Derrane to buy firearms, was arrested by National Crime Agency officers as he exited an apartment in 123. Vata was overheard saying, “That’s all they have to wait and I just need 2 bullets in a gun.”
Vata, from London, admitted to conspiracy to transfer firearms, possession of a prohibited weapon, and conspiracy to supply Class A and B drugs.
Law Enforcement Vows to Crack Down Hard
Hilary Ryan, Specialist Prosecutor from the Crown Prosecution Service, called the case “complex and challenging.” She added:
“Thanks to the tireless efforts of investigators and prosecutors, Derrane and Vata are off the streets. Their wholesale dealings in drugs and guns were driven by greed, with complete disregard for the devastation caused by addiction and firearm violence.”
Authorities promise to continue targeting not just kingpins but also middle-tier criminals aiming to climb the ranks, putting a stop to their reign before more damage is done.
