Brutal Attack on On-Duty Police Officer Leads to Jail for Offender
A violent assault on PC Jagruti Chhaganlal shook Leicester last August. Today, James Nutting, 44, was jailed for three and a half years after admitting to the vicious attack.
Officer Attacked After Confronting Troubled Neighbour
PC Chhaganlal was on duty in Beaumanor Road when Nutting, a man she had previous run-ins with over racial and homophobic abuse complaints, confronted her. Without warning, Nutting launched a savage assault, punching and kicking her repeatedly while she lay on the floor before casually walking away.
He was arrested nearby shortly afterwards.
Chief Constable Condemns Attack, Urges Support for Emergency Workers
“This violent attack on one of our officers while on duty left me deeply troubled,” said Chief Constable Rob Nixon. “Our officers risk their safety every day to protect the public. It is utterly unacceptable for them to face abuse and violence in the line of duty.”
“We must stand united to ensure all assaults on emergency workers are swiftly dealt with,” he added.
Officer Still Recovering After Horrific Injuries
DC Kate Dabrowska, lead investigator, revealed that PC Chhaganlal suffered a laceration to her head, severe swelling, bruising, and redness on her face and arms. Though she has returned to work, it is on restricted duties – the trauma has clearly shaken her confidence.
“There’s no doubt the impact will stay with her for a long time. A visible scar under her eye is a daily reminder of what happened,” Dabrowska said. “Thankfully, witnesses rushed to her aid before emergency services arrived.”
Justice Served, But the Message is Clear
Nutting pleaded guilty to Section 18 Grievous Bodily Harm at Leicester Crown Court and received a three year and six month sentence. Chief Constable Nixon reassured emergency workers they would be backed fully by the force.
“We take every report seriously. Violence against those who protect us will never be tolerated,” Nixon said. “We need communities to support our emergency heroes so they can feel safe while doing their vital work.”
