Cold Case Killer Finally Caught 41 Years Later

John Paul, 61, from Ladbroke Grove, Kensington, was sentenced at the Old Bailey on Friday, 4 November, for the brutal 1980 murder of Anthony “Tony” Bird. The shocking case had gone cold for over four decades before Paul’s shocking confession in 2021.

Anthony Bird Found Bound and Beaten in His Own Home

In June 1980, 41-year-old Tony was discovered dead in his Kensington Gardens Square flat after his employer raised concerns when he didn’t show up for work. His body was found tied with electrical cable, showing bruises and marks from a savage attack. His home had been ransacked, with electrical items and alcohol stolen.

Despite intense forensic investigations and interviews throughout 1980-81, no suspect was identified, and the case went cold.

Decades of Silence Broken by Sudden Confession

On 5 May 2021, Paul walked into Hammersmith Police Station unannounced and confessed to the murder. He was arrested and charged but denied guilt at trial. A jury at the Old Bailey found him guilty on 24 October, and he was sentenced two weeks later.

Paul admitted he had intended to steal from Tony that night. After tying him up with cable, he beat him unconscious with a piece of wood before returning later to rob the flat.

Detective Praises Team’s Persistence as Family Gets Justice

“Paul’s sentence reflects the serious nature of his actions in 1980. They led to the needless death of a man with his whole life ahead of him,” said Detective Chief Inspector Rebecca Reeves from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command.

“Though we may never know why Paul acted so brutally, this conviction means the streets are safer. The team worked tirelessly over the years, and I applaud the professionalism shown, especially when Paul confessed.”

Fingerprints lifted from the original crime scene matched Paul’s prints, cementing the case against him.

Tony’s family expressed mixed emotions: “We accepted Tony’s death years ago, but we’re relieved his killer has finally been convicted after 42 years. Sadly, Tony’s brother passed away last year and couldn’t find comfort in today’s justice.”

After more than four decades, justice has finally caught up with a ruthless killer whose violent crime haunted Kensington for years.
