Life for Killer, Years for Mum After Tragic Death of Toddler Kemarni

Nathaniel Pope, 32, was found guilty of murdering little Kemarni last month. He’s now serving life and must do at least 24 years before parole. Kemarni’s mum, Alicia Watson, 30, was jailed for 11 years for causing or allowing her son’s death at Birmingham Crown Court.

Horrific Injuries Compare to Car Crash Trauma

On 5 June 2018, Watson called paramedics to their flat on Beacon View Road, claiming Kemarni had stopped breathing. Paramedics found the toddler lifeless on the bedroom floor, with his mother trying to perform CPR.

Kemarni suffered multiple fractures, internal injuries, and bruises so severe experts said the blunt force trauma was like being in a car crash. Jurors heard he was most likely stamped on. Medical evidence showed many injuries were old, some already healing, revealing abuse on at least four occasions in the weeks before his death.

Locked In Room and Lies — The Dark Truth Revealed

  • It emerged Pope often locked Kemarni in a room, jamming the door shut with snapped electrical cables.
  • Watson lied to nursery staff and family, blaming a “play fight” with siblings for Kemarni’s injuries.
  • Hours before his death, she took him to a medical centre but didn’t mention the assaults; staff thought he had a stomach bug.
  • Closed-circuit footage shows Watson and Kemarni visited the med centre and then McDonald’s just before he died.

Pathologists testified Kemarni’s fatal injuries most likely happened after returning home — he would not have been able to walk to the medical centre with such wounds.

Justice Served After Long Trial

The pair were charged with murder and multiple child cruelty counts but pled not guilty. Following a months-long trial at Birmingham Crown Court, they were convicted on 12 April. Watson, from Handsworth, Birmingham, was guilty of causing or allowing death and child cruelty. Pope, from Wolverhampton, was guilty of murder and child cruelty.

Detective Inspector James Mahon said: “Kemarni was so young and couldn’t explain the pain he felt. It’s absolutely awful that those meant to care for him caused his injuries and death. I hope this conviction brings some closure for his loved ones.”
