Teen Charged After Dangerous E-Motorbike Ride Shakes Rochester

A teenager faces charges after a thrilling yet reckless e-motorbike ride ripped through Rochester town centre in the early hours. Kent Police are cracking down hard on the antisocial use of electric scooters and e-motorbikes across Medway.

Rider Nabbed After Midnight Chaos on High Street

Just before 1am on Sunday, 8 June, officers were called to reports of a man riding an electric motorbike dangerously along Rochester’s High Street. Police, aided by a quick-thinking member of the public, stopped and detained the rider at the scene.

A search uncovered cannabis, and the e-motorbike was seized. The rider was identified as 19-year-old Daniel Hayward of Humber Crescent, Strood.

Teenager Faces Multiple Charges

Later that day, Hayward was formally charged with several offences, including:

  • Driving without due care and attention
  • Driving without a licence
  • Using a motor vehicle without insurance
  • Possession of a Class B drug (cannabis)

Hayward has been bailed to appear at Medway Magistrates’ Court on 11 July.

More E-Scooters Seized in Medway Crackdown

This arrest comes amid a wider enforcement blitz. On Saturday, 7 June, police seized five illegal e-scooters during high-visibility patrols on Gillingham High Street.

The following Monday, officers recovered seven more e-scooters in Chatham town centre — a whopping 12 confiscated across Medway in just three days.

Police Issue Stark Warning to Riders

Inspector Paul Diddams of Medway’s Community Safety Unit hit out at reckless riders:

“Antisocial behaviour involving electric scooters and motorbikes is not just a nuisance – it’s downright dangerous. It’s illegal to ride without proper authority, and we’re prosecuting offenders.”

Kent Police vow to keep up patrols across Rochester, Gillingham, Chatham, and surrounding areas as summer approaches. They urge riders to play by the rules before the crackdown tightens even more.
