Brutal Killer Valentin Lazar Jailed for Life Over Bus Stop Murder
Valentin Lazar, 21, from Hockley Avenue, E6, was locked up for life at the Old Bailey on Thursday, 3 February. Thanks to his guilty plea, his minimum sentence was cut from 28 years to 23-and-a-half years. He will remain on licence for life.
Chilling CCTV Captures Fatal Encounter
Lazar admitted the murder of 45-year-old Maria Rawlings, whom he met by chance on a bus in Ilford just after 11pm on 3 May 2021. CCTV footage shows them chatting after getting off the bus at Little Heath – a moment that would turn deadly.
He led Maria into nearby shrubbery, where she was left fatally assaulted. Lazar was later captured on camera leaving the scene without Maria but carrying her unique handbag. He then hopped on another bus, disappearing into the night.
Evidence Sealed His Fate
Maria’s body was found the next afternoon surrounded by some of her discarded belongings, including her purse and bank cards. Cops also found Lazar’s cap nearby. A post-mortem revealed she died from neck compression and suffered brutal rib fractures.
Investigators pored over CCTV footage until they got a clear image of Lazar, who was unknown at the time. His picture was swiftly circulated, and police arrested him just one day later.
Family and Police Speak Out
“Within an hour of meeting Lazar, Maria was left for dead in the bushes,” said Detective Inspector Adam Callaghan. “His shockingly violent actions robbed a family of their loved one. We hope this sentence brings some closure to Maria’s family.”
Maria’s father added: “My family and I have endured the most horrific eight months imaginable. Maria was a mother, grandmother, and sister. The pain of losing her is unimaginable. We thank the Met Police and legal teams for their tireless work and support.”
Met Police Pledge to Fight Violence Against Women
DI Callaghan slammed the “alarming prevalence” of violence against women. “We are committed to ensuring all Londoners feel safe, and removing threats like Lazar from society is a vital part of that mission,” he said.
