Notorious Burglar Slapped with 5½ Years in Jail After Public Snitch Films Him Fleeing Crime Scene
Terry Hughes, 46, has finally been put behind bars for a shocking crime spree across Brighton and Hove. The veteran crook, notorious to police, was sentenced to 66 months at Lewes Crown Court on Thursday (March 31) after pleading guilty to five burglaries and fraud by false representation.
Public Hero Films Burglar in Action
Hughes was caught red-handed after CCTV footage from a member of the public showed him leaving a Brunswick Road flat on a Monday afternoon last October, looking suspicious and lugging several large bags. The flat’s occupant returned to find the door forced open and valuables wiped out – including electrical goods, make-up, and designer bags.

The evidence led officers straight to Hughes’ home on York Road, where a search uncovered heaps of stolen items linked to FOUR other break-ins across the city that same month. One cheeky clip also showed Hughes using stolen bank cards in a local shop.
Detective Slams Burglar, Praises Public Action
“Terry Hughes is an experienced criminal, with 29 previous convictions for dozens of offences – the vast majority relating to theft and fraud,” said Detective Chief Inspector Cath O’Connor.
“Many victims only realised they’d been burgled long after arriving home. This case highlights quick-thinking from a member of the public who filmed Hughes, handed over the footage, and helped police make the arrest.
“Burglary will not be tolerated in Brighton and Hove. We’re pleased to have this prolific offender behind bars.”
Hughes faces years in jail for a reign of theft terror – a strong message sent to would-be burglars lurking in the area.
