Whitstable Water Pistol Robber Caught and Jailed Within 20 Minutes
A bungling robber who threatened a Whitstable post office with a water pistol has been slapped with a 2 year 8 month prison sentence – just 20 minutes after the armed ‘heist’.
Water Pistol Hold-Up Ends Quickly
On the evening of April 7, 2020, Kent Police scrambled after reports of an attempted armed robbery at a Whitstable post office.
The culprit, Callum Stewart, 29, tried to intimidate staff with what looked like a gun — a water pistol concealed by a black bag over his hand. But the staff stood their ground and told him to leave, revealing police had already been called.
Fast Police Response Nails Robber Near the Scene
Thanks to a sharp description including Stewart’s distinctive tattoos, officers tracked him down quickly just streets away on Joy Lane.
During the search, Stewart admitted the ‘gun’ was just a water pistol. Police also found a kitchen knife on him and arrested him on the spot.
Stewart Faces Jail After Guilty Plea
Stewart, of Lucerne Drive, was charged next day with attempted robbery and carrying a bladed article in public.
He pleaded guilty at Canterbury Crown Court and received a 32-month sentence on August 19.
“To be at work late at night and confronted by someone pointing what they claim is a gun is frightening,” said investigating officer PC Sam Ings-Kemsley.
“Callum Stewart is a dangerous, selfish individual who played on people’s fears. It was vital to stop him quickly so he couldn’t try this again.”
“I wish the victims all the best and hope this court ruling reassures them.”
