Shoplifter Jailed After Attacking Security Guard with Screwdriver
Spirit thief strikes out in West Bridgford
Jason Kelley, 38, sparked chaos after trying to sneak out of a West Bridgford supermarket on 16 June – clutching two bottles of spirits.
When a security warden challenged him, Kelley didn’t back down. Instead, he grabbed a screwdriver and swung it at the brave guard while grappling with him.
Caught on CCTV and sent to jail
Kelley fled along Bridgford Road but was soon caught on CCTV. Police tracked him down and arrested him.
Luckily, the security warden escaped serious injury.
Judge slams violent thief
Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court on 26 October, Kelley pleaded guilty to theft, assault by beating, and possession of a bladed and offensive weapon in public.
He was sentenced to 14 months behind bars.
PC Mathew Holden said: “This was a violent assault perpetrated against a security guard who was simply doing his job. Kelley thought he could take what he wanted from the shelves and even came armed with a weapon he used to threaten the man who bravely stood in his way. I am pleased he has now been jailed and hope this sentence serves as a warning to other shop thieves about the consequences of this kind of violence.”
