Speeding Driver Kills Man in Horror Crash on Simonstone Lane
Jonathan Lyle, 23, was caught speeding in his Seat Leon on Whins Lane, Simonstone, on the afternoon of 20th April 2022.
Overtake Attempt Ends in Deadly Collision
Lyle tried to overtake a Land Rover Defender, driven by 56-year-old Nicholas Starkie, as the Land Rover was turning into Starkie’s estate. The Seat slammed into the back of the Land Rover, flipping it onto its side. The vehicle’s roof then crashed into a concrete post.
Victim Dies at the Scene
Tragically, Mr Starkie died at the scene of the accident.
Witnesses slammed Lyle’s driving as “reckless and stupid” in the moments before the crash.
Jail Time and Driving Ban for Lyle
Lyle, formerly of Newton Street, Burnley, admitted causing death by careless driving. At Burnley Crown Court on 3rd May, he was sentenced to 18 months behind bars and banned from driving for three years.
