Stalker Edward Vines Found Guilty of Eight More Attempted Breaches Against Marianna Maitlis

Edward Vines has been found guilty once again for repeatedly trying to break a restraining order against ex-Newsnight presenter Marianna Maitlis and her mother. The 52-year-old, convicted multiple times before, faces even more trouble after eight fresh attempted breaches surfaced at Nottingham Crown Court.

Decades-Long Obsession Sparks Multiple Court Battles

Vines first met Maitlis at Cambridge University. His troubling obsession stretches back over 30 years. In 2002, he was convicted of harassment and slapped with a restraining order. After breaching it in 2008, a new order banned him from contacting Maitlis and her family altogether.

Despite this, Vines ignored the law, leading to 12 further violations and seven prior prosecutions—before the latest eight charges.

Locked Up but Still Harassing from Prison

In 2020, Vines was sent behind bars for violating the restraining order. But even inside HMP Nottingham, he continued trying to communicate through letters intercepted by prison staff.

Police Serve Warning: No More Second Chances

“Vines has persistently and systematically violated the restraining order, resulting in numerous court hearings,”

said Nottinghamshire Police Sergeant Carl Holland.

“He has spent nearly half his life harassing Ms Maitlis, and each breach adds to her anguish. We take stalking and harassment extremely seriously and will continue pursuing Vines if he reoffends.”

“This verdict shows we won’t tolerate criminals thinking the law doesn’t apply to them. I hope it reassures other victims that police do listen and act.”

Vines will be sentenced at a later date as authorities vow to keep protecting victims from relentless stalkers like him.
