High-Speed Police Chase Ends in Horror Crash Leaving Victims Seriously Injured
Ty Chapman, 26, sparked chaos as he tried to outrun cops—crashing head-on into stationary traffic while blazing through a red light on the wrong side of the road.
Wild Pursuit on Derby Road
The drama unfolded just before 6.45pm on Sunday, August 30, 2020. Police spotted Chapman driving a silver Honda Civic with false plates along A611 Derby Road near Annesley. When officers moved in to stop him, he slammed the accelerator, speeding off towards Mansfield.
Despite officers trailing far behind, Chapman hit speeds of 100mph-plus. Near the junction with Coxmoor Lane, he recklessly swerved onto the wrong side of the road, smashing into cars stopped at a red light.
Terrifying Crash and Devastating Injuries
One eyewitness recalled, “I closed my eyes and waited to die” as Chapman’s car hurtled over a hill towards her. Two female victims suffered severe injuries, including fractures to the back, arm, and ribs. Chapman himself was found trapped, also with a fractured back.
His male passenger broke his back and needed surgery to repair a hole in his bowel.
Chapman Caught, Convicted and Sentenced
From Rowan Close, Forest Town, Chapman pleaded guilty in February to:
- Two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving
- Driving without a valid licence
- Driving without insurance
- Providing false details about the vehicle’s keeper
Tests showed Chapman was almost double the legal cannabis limit. Though not charged separately, it was a key factor in sentencing.
At Nottingham Crown Court, Chapman was jailed for two and a half years, plus two extra months for false details.
Police React to Shocking Incident
“This was an absolutely terrifying experience for Chapman’s innocent victims. Several of them really are lucky to be alive,” said Case Investigator Louise Melbourne from Nottinghamshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit.
“Chapman’s driving was some of the most dangerous I have ever seen. His chilling disregard for others could have ended even worse.”
“If he’d pulled over calmly, none of this would have happened—no jail time, no lasting injuries for those victims.”
“I’m also grateful to the public who provided first aid and helped with the investigation.”
