78-Year-Old Murder Suspect Dies in Custody After Woman Found Dead in Rugby
A 78-year-old man charged with murder has died while in custody, days after the body of a woman in her 70s was found in their Rugby home.
Murder Charge Following Woman’s Death in Warwickshire
Surendra Patel was arrested in October after police discovered the woman’s body at a property in Aqua Place, Rugby, Warwickshire. Both the victim and Patel reportedly lived at the same address.
Warwickshire Police were called to the scene at around 9:40 AM on October 8, where the woman was pronounced dead. Patel was subsequently charged with her murder.
Death in Custody at HMP Hewell
Patel died on October 31 while held at HMP Hewell in Redditch. He passed away in hospital, confirmed Warwickshire Police.
A Prison Service spokesperson said: “As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate.” Details about the circumstances of Patel’s death have not been released.
