Five Elderly Victims Targeted by Fake Fraud Investigators
Between 22 October and 5 November 2020, scammers posing as fraud investigators rang up five people in their 70s and 80s. They warned the victims that their bank accounts had been compromised.
Cards Snatched and Used for Fraudulent Purchases
Three of the victims handed over their bank cards to couriers who came knocking. Those cards were later used for unauthorised cash withdrawals and fake purchases, lining the fraudsters’ pockets.
Police Arrest Trio on A21 Near Pratt’s Bottom
On 4 November, cops stopped a vehicle on the A21 near Pratt’s Bottom, Greater London. Three suspects inside were arrested on suspicion of fraud. Officers also seized a mobile phone believed to be linked to the scam.
Croydon Man Charged and Others Bailed
- Mark Leacock, 51, of Starling Close, Croydon, was charged with conspiracy to steal and possessing fraud-related items on 6 November.
- Leacock was remanded in custody and is due at Maidstone Crown Court on 4 December.
- A 49-year-old Croydon man and a 21-year-old woman from Beckenham were also arrested but later bailed to return to police on 26 November.
