Teen Hero Joel Bailey Wins Top Award for Mental Health Volunteering
Joel Bailey, just 18, is making waves every Thursday at Jigsaw, a Mansfield-based mental health charity tackling hoarding and other tough issues. The college health and social care student has spent two years volunteering tirelessly, lending an ear and a helping hand to those struggling in their own homes.
From Care Homes to Community Star
Joel’s passion for volunteering began as a care worker. “I really enjoy helping people,” he says. He later joined Jigsaw and organised a food bank at college to raise vital supplies. At Jigsaw’s Thursday support group, he chats over coffee, helps clean cluttered homes, and creates safer spaces for vulnerable people.
“Volunteering isn’t a job for me, it’s a passion. When I’m here, it brings me positivity and happiness seeing the difference we make.” – Joel Bailey
Joel’s hands-on help and empathy have earned him the Bringing People Together Award 2023, part of the prestigious Live Our Best Life Awards launched by Nottinghamshire Police. He’s not just volunteering on weekdays — he often gives his days off to support the cause.
Boss Praises Natural Talent and Dedication
Alison Waring, head of Jigsaw, calls Joel “the best student I’ve ever had.” She praised his caring, non-judgemental attitude and his willingness to go above and beyond: “He comes in at 6am, even during holidays, and helps with hoarding, gardening, and social activities. He’s simply amazing.”
Community Cheers for Inspirational Role Model
Romel Davis, founder of the awards, hails Joel as “an inspiration, a role model who gives up his own time to help others.” She adds, “We need more people like Joel. He has changed countless lives for the better.”
Joel hopes to join the army after completing his course, but his heart remains with the people he supports. This teen’s compassion is lighting up Mansfield — and proving that age is no barrier to making a difference.
