Teen Jailed for Stabbing 16-Year-Old to Death During Gang Robbery in Haringey
Brutal Attack in Lordship Lane Park
A 16-year-old boy, Stelios Averkiou, was fatally stabbed during a gang robbery while sitting with friends in Lordship Lane Recreation Ground, Haringey, in summer 2021. On August 1, Sylvester and Gruber approached the group, accusing them of being rivals before launching a vicious attack. Stelios stood up to the assailants and was stabbed in the thigh by Sylvester, who was armed with a large knife.
Justice Served: Killer Sentenced
Kyi-Reice Sylvester, 18, of Flamstead End Road, Cheshunt, was convicted of first-degree murder at the Old Bailey in November 2022. On January 20, he was sentenced to 19 years in prison, plus a concurrent four-year sentence for multiple burglaries after pleading guilty.
Meanwhile, Leon Gruber, 18, of Amersham Avenue, was cleared of murder but admitted to four counts of robbery. He received a 34-month jail term.
Emergency Response and Investigation
- London Ambulance Service rushed to the scene at 14:09 but Stelios was bleeding heavily from a massive thigh wound.
- Police officers applied a tourniquet as London’s Air Ambulance performed emergency surgery on the spot.
- Despite initial hopes, Stelios died in hospital on August 10 without regaining consciousness.
- Police used CCTV and mobile phone data to track the suspects’ movements and confirmed both were present during the attack.
Tragic Loss Sparks Call to End Knife Crime
“Tragically, another young life has been cut short by people carrying knives,” said Detective Chief Inspector Neil Rawlinson.
“My family has been ripped apart by an act of senseless violence,” said Stelios’ mother, Maria Averkiou. “He was just a 16-year-old boy in a park with friends. Our hearts are shattered.”
Detective Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh added, “Knife crime is a priority for the Met. We will continue working tirelessly to bring offenders to justice and keep our communities safe.”
This chilling murder highlights the urgent need for tougher action against knife crime on London’s streets.
