Man Arrested Under New Domestic Abuse Law for Strangulation
On Wednesday, June 29, James Preston was arrested over multiple alleged assaults on a woman. Officers charged him with intentionally strangling the victim, using a new offence introduced by the Domestic Abuse Act 2021.
Domestic Abuse Act Powers Put to Work
The Act, which came into force on June 7, has already seen Kent Police apply the strangulation charge in three cases, including Preston’s. Convicted offenders face up to five years behind bars.
Preston Remanded in Custody
The 33-year-old appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court on June 30. Besides strangulation, he faces three counts of assault. Preston was remanded in custody ahead of his next court hearing.
