Train Driver Sentenced After High-Speed Crash at Kirkby Station
A Merseyrail train driver has narrowly escaped jail after crashing a train into Kirkby station at nearly three times the speed limit. Philip Hollis, 56, was handed a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, at Liverpool Crown Court.
Speeding Train Hits Buffer Stops, Causes £450k Damage
On 13 March 2021, Hollis was driving a service from Liverpool Central to Kirkby due to arrive at 18:52. The Network Rail speed limit for the station approach is just 15mph — but Hollis slammed the train in at 40mph.
He attempted emergency braking, but it was too late. The train collided with the buffer stops, derailing and causing an estimated £450,000 worth of damage. Twelve passengers and the guard were on board, but thankfully, only minor injuries were reported.
Phone Use Caught Seconds Before Crash
Hollis told police he was distracted retrieving his bag and a bottle of Lucozade in the cab. However, when officers seized and analysed his phone, a WhatsApp message was sent just 26 seconds before impact.
Detective Chief Inspector Steve May said: “Our analysis confirmed Hollis was using his phone seconds before crashing the train at high speed. I have no doubt this distracted him, putting passengers and staff at serious risk. It was sheer luck no one was killed.”
Hollis later admitted his phone should have been switched off during driving. He was sacked by Merseyrail in September 2021.
