Kayakers Stranded on Darnet Ness Rescued by Coastguard and Police

On Saturday, 29 January 2022, a group of kayakers found themselves trapped by fierce winds and waves in the River Medway. Stranded on the tiny island of Darnet Ness, they had no choice but to call 999 for help around midday.

Brave Police Officers Swim Through Mud to Reach Kayakers

The Kent Police Search and Marine Unit rushed to the scene. Getting as close to shore as they could, two officers bravely swam the final stretch and battled through 100 metres of thick mud to reach the group. They quickly checked everyone for injuries.

RNLI and Police Team Up for Daring Rescue

The Sheerness RNLI Lifeboat crew arrived in a smaller, nimble Rigid Inflatable Boat (RHIB), picking up the stranded kayakers before transferring them to the Kent Police RHIB Invicta. This larger boat carried the entire group along with their kayaks back to safety at Gillingham Marina.

Thankfully, no one was hurt in the ordeal.

“Thankfully no one was hurt and the group had the right equipment with them – dry suits, flotation devices, VHF radios and mobile phones, allowing them to call for rescue,” said Police Constable Ryan Duffy.

“Even experienced water users can get caught out by sudden strong winds and worsening weather. It’s vital to have the means to call for help. I’m glad we could work with our partners to bring them home safely.”
