Verwood Woman Stole Over £500,000 from Employer
Emma Elizabeth Rhodes, 37, of Manor Land, Verwood, pleaded guilty to fraud at Bournemouth Crown Court on 2 November 2020. She was due to stand trial later that month but admitted the charges early.
Lavish Lifestyle Funded by Stolen Cash
Rhodes worked as financial controller for Norco Holdings Ltd, a composite products company employing around 150 people, from September 2014 until her dismissal in May 2018. Her salary grew from £30,000 to £40,000 during that period.
Between December 2015 and May 2018, Rhodes stole a staggering £525,000 through 29 concealed transactions ranging from £1,632 to over £35,000. The stolen funds went into three Lloyds bank accounts, including one held jointly with a man who was later cleared of any wrongdoing.
She splashed the cash on a major property rebuild, a £79,995 Range Rover Sport, an £8,300 Rolex watch, luxury holidays, and upscale hotel stays. Police only recovered two shotguns and a diamond ring as assets.
Busted After Workplace Indiscretion
Rhodes was disciplined in May 2018 for workplace misconduct and promptly sacked. The following week, financial irregularities surfaced, prompting Norco’s owner to alert NatWest bank. An investigation swiftly traced the thefts back to Rhodes.
On the day she was caught, Rhodes sent a desperate message to her former boss, pleading with him not to involve the police and hinting at self-harm.
Judge Slams ‘Shocking Breach of Trust’
Judge Brian Forster QC condemned Rhodes for repeatedly defrauding her employer and financing a lavish lifestyle on stolen money.
Detective Constable Steph Ashworth of Bournemouth CID said: “Emma Rhodes abused her position of trust to carry out a sustained campaign of theft over two and a half years. Her greed funded an extravagant lifestyle and property rebuild.”
“She pleaded guilty just two weeks before trial and tried to shift blame with baseless claims about the victim.”
“This case highlights Dorset Police’s dedication to tackling fraud. Thanks to everyone involved for their professionalism.”
