Kent Police swooped in the early hours of Wednesday, 22 June 2022, after a patient at a local hospital lost it and went on the rampage, verbally abusing and trying to assault a staff member.
Violence Erupts at Edenbridge Hospital
When colleagues stepped in to help the victim, they too were targeted and attacked. Police response officers arrived quickly and arrested 28-year-old Rebecca Colman of Station Road, Edenbridge, right on the spot.
Swift Justice at Medway Magistrates’ Court
The very next day, Thursday 23 June, Colman faced Medway Magistrates’ Court where she pleaded guilty to two counts of assault by beating emergency workers and causing a public disturbance on NHS premises.
She was handed a jail sentence of 240 days with a suspended term activated due to previous offences against emergency personnel.
Police Crack Down on Abuse of Emergency Workers
Chief Inspector Omid Changizi, District Commander for Tunbridge Wells, slammed the attacks: “Every day, police officers and hospital personnel face unpredictable, difficult, and sometimes volatile situations. They must be allowed to do their jobs without abuse or violence. Assaults on emergency workers are completely unacceptable, and we will prosecute to the full extent of the law.”
Since the Assaults on Emergency Workers Act of November 2018, offenders face tougher penalties when targeting cops, paramedics, nurses, and other blue light heroes. Judges now have stronger powers to sentence those who put emergency workers in harm’s way.
