Elderly man battered in daylight robbery after buying candles
An innocent pensioner, in his 70s, was brutally attacked after a trip to the shops on Sandown High Street. What began as a simple errand ended in violence and fear near the seafront.
Victim followed and attacked outside shops
On Wednesday 17th November 2021, the victim visited Sainsbury’s Local to buy candles after a power outage at his holiday accommodation. After withdrawing cash, he was approached by 41-year-old Emma Louise Stafford. The woman struck up conversation before and after he entered the store.
Stafford then accompanied him to a nearby Co-op. The man left alone and began walking down the High Street, only to spot Stafford trailing him.
As they neared the seafront by Culver Parade, Stafford caught up and tried to force him to go with her. When he refused, she dragged him to the ground, hitting and kicking his head while demanding money.
Public hero intervenes, police arrest Stafford
A passer-by rushed in to help, handing Stafford £10 to get her off the victim and away from the scene. Police soon found Stafford half a mile away. On arrest, officers discovered she was in possession of cannabis.
Stafford was charged with attempted robbery and possession of a Class B drug.
Judge slams savage attack; Stafford jailed
At Newport Crown Court on 10th January, Stafford pleaded guilty to both offences. Yesterday (3rd March), she was jailed for 32 months.
“I don’t know what would have happened if they hadn’t have helped me,” the victim said, admitting he was too weak to fight her off.
His Honour Judge Melville QC condemned Stafford’s actions:
“It is beyond the logic of any reasonable person why you did this. You attached yourself to an entirely innocent, vulnerable older man, pushed him to the ground, hit and kicked him repeatedly. You clearly saw him as a soft target.
Your poor start in life and difficulties do not justify this attack.”
Detective praises bravery of victim and public
DC Ross Jones called the attack “savage” and “brazen”.
“Stafford’s monstrous behaviour was like something from a horror film. I’m glad she’s behind bars. The victim’s courage in supporting this investigation must be applauded. We also thank the public who stepped in to stop her.”
