Driver Jailed Over Vintage Car Crash That Killed 80-Year-Old Veteran
Michael Black, 52, from Crawley, West Sussex, has been slapped with a 20-month prison sentence and a 22-month driving ban. The punishment follows his conviction for the death of 80-year-old vintage car driver Ronald Carey.
Fatal Crash on Brighton Veteran Car Run
Ronald Carey and his wife Billi were taking part in the annual Brighton Veteran Car Run, a classic event attracting vintage car lovers from across the globe. The couple had travelled all the way from Canada for the event.
Tragically, during the run, Black caused a crash that killed Ronald and left Billi seriously injured.
Distracted Driving Caught on Mobile Phone
Investigators revealed Michael Black was on a mobile phone call when the collision happened, a detail uncovered by mobile phone analysis.
Temporary Detective Constable Kelly Newton said: “This tragic set of events has deeply affected the family. Our thoughts remain with Mr Carey’s loved ones. We hope this sentence helps them begin to come to terms with their loss and start moving forward.”
The case serves as a stark warning about the dangers of using a phone while driving, with fatal consequences.
