Monster Caught: Man Jailed for Horrific Child Abuse on Isle of Wight

Jonathan Richard Maertens, 35, from Freshwater, has been locked up for life after filming himself abusing girls aged 4 to 17. The predator not only committed terrible assaults but also edited and hoarded nearly 2,500 videos and more than 12,000 indecent images at his home.

Shocking Haul of Abuse Material Found

Police swooped on Maertens’ Richmond Meade address, seizing hard drives packed with vile content. Alongside his own crimes, officers uncovered a staggering 6,500 additional videos and 197,000 illegal images of children. Fortunately, there is no evidence the footage was shared further.

A specialist police team identified every victim, providing crucial support to them and their families throughout the harrowing investigation.

Massive List of Charges

Maertens pleaded guilty to 34 charges, including:

  • 10 counts of repeated rape of a child under 13
  • 3 counts of assault by penetration of a child under 13
  • 5 counts of sexual assault of a child under 13
  • 3 counts of rape of a child
  • Multiple counts of taking and making indecent photographs
  • Possession of a paedophile manual
  • Assault on an emergency worker
  • Producing a class B drug (cannabis)

Police Speak Out

“Jonathan Maertens manipulated situations to access children, even stupefying some before abusing them,” said Detective Inspector Toby Elcock of Hampshire Constabulary.

“His crimes have caused unimaginable harm to the victims and their families. We hope the sentence brings them justice. Support will continue to help them move forward.”

“Anyone with concerns about past contact with Maertens should contact Hampshire Police, quoting Operation Foundry. We urge victims of sexual abuse to come forward.”

Superintendent Sarah Jackson added: “Our team worked tirelessly to ID every victim and secure a guilty plea, avoiding a traumatic trial. We treat all sexual assault reports seriously and are committed to justice.”

“It’s vital survivors and their families get proper support, which we provide in partnership with other agencies.”

Sentenced for Life – and Banned for Good

Maertens now faces life imprisonment, a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, a ban on working with children, and registration as a sex offender.
