Brutal BB Gun Robbers Jailed After Terrifying Newsagent Attack
Faustas Demidovas and Vaidas Jankauskas carried out a violent robbery in February 2020, leaving a newsagent staff member injured after being shot in the face with a BB gun. The pair made off with less than £200 in cash.
Violent Robbery Caught on CCTV
The robbery happened at a newsagent on Bligh Way, Strood just before 11pm on 21 February. Demidovas fired three BB pellets into the victim’s face while Jankauskas grabbed cash from the till.
The victim needed hospital treatment for facial injuries.
Suspects Traced Despite Masks
Though the robbers had covered their faces, CCTV footage tracked their getaway vehicles – a Citroen C3 and a blue BMW. About 45 minutes later, both cars were caught on camera at a petrol station in Gravesend.
Demidovas arrived in the BMW, changed clothes, and was later stopped by police in London. He was detained and held on remand. Jankauskas, wearing the same clothes as during the robbery and driving the Citroen despite a driving ban, was arrested at home in early March.
Linked Armed Robbery in Dartford
A week before the Strood raid, Demidovas also targeted a newsagent in East Hill, Dartford. Armed with a replica gun, he threatened staff, fired at the ceiling, and stole cash after forcing a customer away from the till.
Hefty Sentences Delivered
- Demidovas, 30, was found guilty of two robberies, possession of imitation firearms, and attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent. He was sentenced to 13 years at Woolwich Crown Court on 21 April 2021.
- Jankauskas, 30, pleaded guilty to robbery, possessing an imitation firearm, and driving offences. He received seven years and nine months in September 2020.
Police Condemn ‘Brazen Violence’
“Jankauskas and Demidovas each used excessive and brazen violence to steal money,” said Detective Constable Rob Sircar of Kent Police. “The victims feared for their lives, believing the weapons were real guns. Both offenders pose a serious danger to the public.”
Four other men were arrested but released without charge. Kent Police urge anyone with information to call 01474 366149 quoting 46/33484/20, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or via their website.
