Tragic M1 Crash: Mother Jailed After Two Kids Killed in Horror Smash
Derby Woman Pleads Guilty to Fatal Crash
Mary McCann, 35, from Bamford Avenue, Derby, admitted guilt at Aylesbury Crown Court on 16 February. The mum was sentenced to four years and one month behind bars. She also faces a driving ban for over seven years, followed by an extended retest before she can get back on the road.
Deadly Collision on the Motorway
The horrific crash happened just after 11pm on Monday, 9 August last year. McCann was driving northbound on the M1 between junctions 14 and 15 when her car veered from lane two to lane one and slammed into the back of a white Scania HGV.
Her two children, four-year-old Lilly and ten-year-old Peter, tragically died at the scene. A two-year-old girl in the car escaped serious injury. The lorry driver walked away unhurt.
Investigation Reveals Shocking Details
“This was a tragic incident in which two young children lost their lives,” said Detective Constable Ian Stevens of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit.
“Our investigation found the children were not wearing seatbelts or in the proper child seats. McCann was speeding and under the influence of alcohol—three of the deadly ‘Fatal Four’ factors that often cause serious crashes.”
DC Stevens warned: “Using correct child restraints, obeying the speed limit, and never driving after drinking alcohol are crucial for road safety. Ignoring these rules can have fatal consequences.”
Justice Served but Family Left Devastated
Mary McCann must now serve prison time for her actions that led to the loss of two young lives. The thoughts of all involved remain with the grieving family at this heartbreaking time.
