Barber Jailed for Shocking Daylight Attempted Rape in Shop
Daylight Attack Shocks Local Community
John Akinrinola, 23, has been slammed with a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence after a terrifying attempt to rape a shop assistant in broad daylight.
The violent assault happened at 11am on December 12, when Akinrinola entered an off-licence, grabbed a bottle of wine, and started drinking it inside the shop.
Brutal Assault Caught on CCTV
When the female shop worker challenged him, Akinrinola launched a horrific attack. He grabbed her genitals, pulled down his trousers, forced her to the ground, and tried to rape her.
The brave woman fought back, scratching his face and hitting him on the head, forcing him to flee.
Judge Christopher Grout, after reviewing CCTV footage, described the attack as “very disturbing,” adding: “That woman was subjected to a very serious assault. She does an incredible job of defending herself. The whole thing lasts nearly 10 minutes.”
Offender’s Background and Court Verdict
Akinrinola, a barber from Bexley, pleaded guilty to sexual assault and attempted rape but offered no reason for his actions. During police questioning, he remained silent.
Though diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, doctors confirmed his mental health did not influence his behaviour that day. He had no previous convictions or known mental health issues and was married at the time.
The judge expressed bafflement over the attack, admitting he was “left in the void” about the motive. Akinrinola admitted to smoking cannabis earlier, but the judge made clear this was no excuse.
“It is clear from CCTV that you were under the influence, though I make it clear this is no excuse for what happened,” Judge Grout stated.
Sentenced and Registered for Life
Akinrinola was sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court and will also be placed on the sex offenders register for life.
Police arrested him near the scene shortly after the assault.
This appalling attack is a stark reminder to always stay vigilant in public places. The courage of the shop assistant in defending herself and quickly alerting police was vital in securing justice.
