Basingstoke Burglar Joins Police Chase, Jailed for Five Years After Theft Spree

Basingstoke Burglar Jailed for Five Years After High-Speed Police Chase

A Basingstoke man has been locked up for five years after a daring burglary spree ended in a high-speed chase with police.

Daniel Malcolm Admits Multiple Burglaries and Dangerous Driving

Daniel Malcolm, 37, of Kings Road, Basingstoke, appeared at Winchester Crown Court on Friday, April 29. He pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary, one count of dangerous driving, and driving while disqualified. He also asked the court to consider nine other burglaries and one attempted burglary as part of his case.

Police Chase After Stolen Vehicles and Theft

The court heard Malcolm stole a car, keys, and cash from a house on Cambrian Way during the night of January 10. Just a few days later, on January 13, he hit another home on Pack Lane, making off with a motorbike and TVs.

The drama escalated the following day when Malcolm led police on a dangerous chase, speeding along a footpath beside the A30 in a stolen car. He finally abandoned the vehicle at Down Grange playing fields and fled on foot, but was quickly arrested.

Five-Year Sentence Sends Message to Burglars

Judge Susan Evans sentenced Malcolm to five years behind bars, down from an initial eight years thanks to his early guilty pleas.

“I’m happy with the sentence given – a prolific burglar has been taken off the streets,” said PC Andrew Ferguson, the officer in charge of the case. “This sentence should reassure the community that burglary offences are taken seriously. We will make Basingstoke a hostile place for offenders.”

PC Ferguson added that, although burglary rates in Basingstoke remain low, it remains a police priority. “Earlier this year, we launched an operation to revisit burglary victims in the town and offer crime prevention advice,” he explained.
